The VacDry Control System Print E-mail

PCS VacDry Kilns Ltd. builds vacuum kilns that work: drying rate is very fast, quality is very high, and results are consistently good because of the control system.

Vacuum kilns must be designed with each of the components in the heating, cooling and vacuum systems sized properly.  The control system can then use these components to manage the variables which affect drying.

Our controllers are easy to use.  Important factors like chamber pressure (relative vacuum) have their own digital readout for setpoint and process value. Setpoint changes are made by simply the desired setpoint, and using the digital keypad to enter the new setting.

The control system is based around a single OPLC (Operating panel + Programmable Logic Controller), used to measure, control and monitor all of the relevant process information.  A computer is interfaced to the control system, collecting data constantly.  The data is used to make historical graphs which show you how the kiln's components are working.  You can access this computer from a second computer anywhere in the world via a remote desktop program such as pcAnywhere.

You can see at a glance how well the system is working and how fast the wood is drying.  And, if you want to make a change, a couple clicks will change anything you can access from the actual OPLC itself.  You can make adjustments from home or the office, literally anytime and anywhere.  Click here for more information.

The computer is not used for control, its functions are simply to collect and present data in an easy to use format, and to provide the operator with access to the OPLC from anywhere they may be.  Typically, your kiln operator enters the inital settings when the kiln is started.  With the easier to dry species, he needs to make no further adjustments.  When drying the most difficult sizes or species which might take longer to dry, one or two adjustments might be required during the drying process.

Our kilns give outstanding results because we have learned to use the involved forces of nature.  Our heating system gradually increases the kinetic energy of the water in the wood.  This results in a gradual increase of the water's vapor pressure.  Our pressure controller then creates a pressure gradient which results in a very rapid and controlled evaporation.  The end result is excellent drying.
